<p>A method of producing a filter cake from e.g. sewage sludge, comprises the steps of mixing the sludge with a flocculating or bonding agent and then passing the mixture at pressure into a filter chamber press, while measuring the flow rate and density of the sludge. Predetermined reference values indicative of the rate of additon of the binding agent required to produce a filter cake having a fixed dry solids content and in a fixed time, are compared to values derived from the measurements and the rate of addition of the agent is adjusted according to the difference between the measured and reference values to produce a cake of fixed quality and in a fixed time and without the need for an expert operator.</p> |
