The rechargeable battery (10) uses an alkaline metal in a molten state as an anode (12). It is separated (24) from the cathode (16). The cell stands erect, and in this position the separator makes an angle with the horizontal such that the level of the surface of the anode metal in the anode section is free. During discharge the level sinks, and during the recharging period it rises again. The anode section has lower (38) and upper (40) portions. The latter has a larger horizontal cross-section (A) than the cross-section (B) of the lower portion. In the discharged state the lower portion is completely filled by the anode metal.
