PURPOSE:To improve the follow up characteristic of the actual rotation of optical fibers to the rotation of a theta axis by mounting theta clamps on Z-axis bases and using the clamps commonly as covering clamps. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 10 are set and are gripped by fiber clamps 22 and the theta clamps 58 in common use as the covering clamps. The end face images of the optical fibers 10 projected on a mirror 52 are observed by a microscope 54 and the centers are roughly aligned in the theta direction by dials 36. The alignment in the x-y directions is then executed and the fine alignment in the theta direction is executed by fine adjustment dials 80 while a power meter is observed. The alignment in the x-y direction is executed again and thereafter, the fibers are fusion-spliced. The theta clamps 58 are mounted on Z-bases 24 and are used commonly as the covering clamps 26 in such a manner, by which the clamps 58 are positioned near to the fiber clamps 22 and, therefore, the twisting of the optical fibers 10 at the time of the alignment of the theta axis is obviated and the follow up characteristic of the actual rotation of the optical fibers to the rotation of the theta axis is improved. |
