In order to prevent the flowing out or flowing back of the polyurethane into the runner before reacting is complete even if there is no cover plate and no movable bottom core for closing the runner, in a process and an apparatus in which the material is injected, successively, if appropriate, into the cavity of a mould through a runner it is proposed that the gate (1) of the runner or of the connecting flange on the mould (3) should have as part of its wall a flexible diaphragm (2) which is subjected to compressed air on the side (4) facing away from the remaining wall of the gate (1) in such a way that the diaphragm (2) comes invertedly to bear in a sealing manner against the remaining wall (5) of the gate. <IMAGE>
