To avoid uncontrolled electrostatic charging of the sheets when sheet feeders are running, in addition to the normally moistened compressor air, highly moistened air is blown in at particular intervals. It is thus achieved, for the transporting of the sheets through the machine, that, during the separating operation of the uppermost sheet from the feed pile where a laminar air layer is produced around the sheet, this air layer has a high relative air humidity. On the other hand, excessive moistening of the sheet edges and of machine parts is avoided due to the moistened air being cycled.
