In the case of transformers of known type, the windings must be dielectrically insulated from the transformer core, which is normally at earth potential. The insulation material which is thus introduced between the windings and the core leads to a relatively large winding diameter and, in consequence, to a high requirement for conductor material, and it contributes to a large structural volume of the transformer. In contrast, in the case of the transformer according to the invention, the cost of insulating the windings from the core can be reduced to a minimum, with the advantage of a smaller winding diameter, a reduced requirement for conductor material and insulating material, and hence a smaller transformer volume and transformer weight. The transformer according to the invention has a core which is divided into a plurality of sections which are at different potential. The windings are now arranged around the core such that the mean potential of individual winding sections corresponds approximately to the potential of the associated section of the transformer core. In consequence, the cost of insulating the windings from the transformer core is very low. Transformers for measurement tasks (voltage transformers), for producing high test voltages and for power transmission and for power supply.
