NEAR INFRARED DETERMINATION OF PETROPHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Methods are provided for determining preselected petrophysical and petrochemical properties of materials employing near infrared spectra. The methods of the present invention illuminate a sample with near infrared radiation from a source of near infrared radiation and measure the infrared radiation emanating from said sample. The methods of the present invention employ calibration specimens having at least one known preselected petrophysical or petrochemical property that are used to determine which near infrared wavelengths correlate to that property and against which a sample having an unknown value for that petrophysical or petrochemical property may have the value of that property determined from its near infrared spectra by means of the correlation.
