PURPOSE:To move a dimer on the low-temperature wetted wall by thermal diffusion and discharge the dimer from the lower end of a reaction vessel, by introducing methane gas from the upper end of the reaction vessel having a pair of vessel walls in which one thereof is kept at a high temperature and the other is kept at a low temperature and forming the dimer and H2 on the high-temperature wall surface. CONSTITUTION:A cooling water passage 2 is formed on the outer peripheral side of a cylindrical reaction vessel 1 made of Pyrex glass and a tungsten wire 3 is installed in the central part of the cylindrical vessel 1 to introduce methane gas from an introduction port 4. The methane gas is then dimerized on the surface of the tungsten wire 3, moved to a cooling surface by thermal diffusion and taken out of a taking outlet 5 by a downflow. The composition of a 2C hydrocarbon which is a product depends greatly on the temperature of the tungsten wire as follows, ethane accounts for 70% at 1000 deg.C, ethylene accounts for about 95% at 1200-1300 deg.C and acetylene accounts for 60% at 1400 deg.C. Since H2 is formed as a by-product, there is no waste.
