PURPOSE: To ensure stable cycle operation by providing a controller for driving an expansion valve to achieve control for the expansion valve of each indoor unit in an opening direction of the valve upon cooling operation based upon a superheat located on the side of an indoor heat exchanger while achieving control for the same valve in a closing operation of the same valve based upon a suction gas superheat of a refrigerant compressor. CONSTITUTION: When in expansion valves 5c, 5d of each indoor unit one valve is operated in an opened direction, provided outlet superheat of indoor heat exchangers 6a and 6b of the indoor unit is less than a set valueαs but a suction gas superheat to a refrigerant compressor 1 is more than a set valueβs , degrees of openings of the expansion valves 5c and 5d are kept unchanged. Then, when the expansion valves 5c and 5d of each indoor unit is operated in a closed direction, the indoor units are all together changed by the same opening with the aid of the suction gas superheat to the refrigerant compressor 1. Further, the outlet superheat set valueαs of the indoor heat exchangers 6a and 6b is increased, while the suction gas superheat set valueβs to the refrigerant compressor 1 is reduced. Hereby, there is ensured stable cycle operation without hunting.
