PURPOSE:To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium having a high Kerr rotating angle, high coercive force and excellent squareness of a Kerr hysteresis loop by constituting a periodic laminated structure of thin film layers essentially consisting of rare earth metals and thin layers essentially consisting of transition metals. CONSTITUTION:The recording medium is constituted of the periodic structure alternately laminated with the thin film layers A and B. The layers B and A satisfy the formula I and x, y, z, xII, yII satisfy the formula II when the respective element groups of the respective compsns. are expressed by R, S, T, M, N and the component ratios (atom.%) thereof are designated respectively as x, y, z, xII, yII. The element group R is Gd; the group S rare earth elements inclusive of Sc and Y; the group T is elements excluding Fe; the group M is Fe and the group N is the elements excluding the group R and M. The film thicknesses of the layers A and B are so determined as to exist within the ranges of (11, 30), (16, 60), (30, 60), (26, 30), (18, 6) successively from the point (2, 6) when the relations between the above-mentioned film thicknesses are expressed by a-b orthogonal coordinates. |
