PURPOSE: To enhance activity and thermal stability by depositing Cu having a grain size of <=300 Å and an average particle size of <=100 Å on a support contg. substantially amorphous chromium, thereby forming a hydrogenation catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The hydrogenation catalyst is formed by uniformly depositing the Cu of <=300 Å in all particle sizes and the average particle size of <=100 Åon the support contg. the substantially amorphous chromium. The particle sizes of all the deposited Cu particles are adequately <=100 Å. The surface area of the Cu measured by the field of N2 O at 20 deg.C 18 adequately about 18.5 m<2> /g. The atom ratio of Cr to the Cu is adequately 0.6:1 to 2.75:1, more adequately 1.2:/to 1.4:1. Promoters of γ-alumina, barium oxide and manganese oxide may be incorporated at 0.01 to 10 wt.% into the catalyst. |
