The device comprises a combination of a fender (13) made of spring material with dash-pots (18,19) mounted on the wall so that some of the impact energy is absorbed by the spring material of the fender in the form of displacement energy, and some is dissipated by the dash- pot in forcing fluid from one chamber (18a) to another (18b) through restricted orifices (19a). The dash-pot may be provided with a by- pass path (11) for the fluid containing a non-return valve (12) so that the path is closed when the device is being compressed but is open to allow the device to return quickly to its rest state when a vessel moves away from the device.
