A jaw, in particular a front jaw for ski safety bindings, comprises a sole grip (22) arranged on a pin (21) and two elbow levers (15) each of which is rotatably mounted on an axis (16) arranged on a support (14) and pivots laterally against the force of a spring (5). The sole grip (22) is moved upward against the force of the spring (5) by a force exerted vertically upward on the sole grip by a compensating lever (10) adjacent to one of the elbow levers (15), either immediately or through an intercalated intermediate lever. The pin (21) can be moved vertically and in the event of overloading is actuated by a wedge (27) guided on the support (14), on which the ski boot rests. A compensation of the additional frictional forces acting on the sole grip (22) in the event of a twist during a forward or backward fall is thereby achieved. The wedge (27), which supports the ski boot (11), has two supporting rollers and is connected to a longitudinally mobile guiding pin (6a) mounted in a sleeve-like traction rod (6) which engages in the elbow levers (15).
