In order to improve the ignition reliability in the case of a method for burning gaseous or liquid fuel for the production of hot gas, with a nozzle in a burner, from which a fuel jet enters a mixing tube, with a multi-hole screen which surrounds the outlet of the nozzle and subdivides a burner housing into an upstream-situated antechamber receiving the nozzle and a downstream-situated combustion chamber receiving the mixing tube, with a central passage in the multi-hole screen for the passage of the fuel jet escaping from the nozzle, and with a number of openings in the multi-hole screen which surround the passage and through which combustion air from the antechamber enters the mixing tube, and also with an ignition device for igniting the fuel-air mixture downstream of the multi-hole screen, it is proposed that the flow rate of the mixture in an angularly limited cross-sectional region close to the wall of the mixing tube is reduced compared with the flow rate in the remaining mixing-tube cross-section, and the ignition is carried out in the cross-sectional region of lower flow rate which is close to the wall. In addition, a burner for carrying out this method is proposed.
