Stainless ferritic steel strips containing chromium of thickness not greater than 10 mm are produced by continuous casting of molten metal having specified characteristic between two cooled, rotating rolls of roughness above 5 microns . At least 60 volume % of an inert gas soluble in the steel is used around the meniscus of the molten metal present between the cylinders. The molten metal comprises (in weight %) C%+N% <= 0.12, Mn% <= 1, P% <= 0.04, Si% <= 1, Mo% <= 2.5, Cr 11-19%, Al <= 1, Ti%+Nb%+Zr% <= 1, and Fe and production impurities the remainder. The molten metal has characteristic psi p of 35-60%, where psi p = 420 C% + 470 N% + 23 Ni% + 9 Cu% + 7 Mn% - 11.5 Cr% - 11.5 Si% - 12 Mo% - 23 V% - 47 Nb% - 49 Ti% - 52 Al% + 189. The inert gas is preferably a mixture of nitrogen and argon in proportions of 60-100 and 0-30% respectively. The roughness of the surfaces of the axially horizontal casting rolls is preferably 5-20 microns ,
