Alcohols (I) are aminated with linear polyamines (II) using a catalyst, comprising a mixt. of copper oxide or hydroxide and at least one Gp. II metal oxide or hydroxide, which has been activated initially by heating in (I) in the absence of (II) whilst passing a stream of pref. pure hydrogen. - (I) are typically 6-20C prim. alkanols; or polyoxyalkylene alcohols R(OA)nOH, where R = 1-20C alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; A = 1-20C alkylene; and n = 1-20. (II) is triethylene tetramine (IIa) or diethylene triamine. The Gp. II metal is Ca, Ba or Mg.
