4-Oxo azabicyclo (3.2.O) heptan-7-one 3-carboxylic acid of formula (I) with anti-fungal and beta-lactamase activity is made by (a) condensing (III) with (IV) in presence of catalyst and anhydrous solvent at 0-100 deg.C to give (V); (b) reacting (V) with a protic acid in aq. organic medium to give (VI); (c) treating with SO2Cl2 in presence of a base, in inert medium at low temp. to give (VII); (d) reacting with a halogenated salt in aprotic polar medium to give (VIII); (e) cyclising in basic or neutral polar medium under phase transference conditions to give ester (II); (f) subjecting to hydrolysis or hydrogenolysis to give acid (I); and (g) opt. forming a salt.
