A device for counting discrete elements in suspension in a fluid medium (Mf) comprises a buffer reservoir (1) containing the fluid in which the discrete elements (Ed) are present in suspension. Means (2) for inducing turbulent flow are provided and means (3) for forming a stream of fluid are connected to said means for inducing turbulent flow. The means for inducing turbulent flow (2) and for forming a stream of fluid (3) make it possible to arrange each discrete element (Ed) in any colony of elements in suspension in a sequence of unique elements in this stream of fluid. Counting means are provided in the vicinity of the stream of fluid. Application to counting living organisms for example small fish in a fish-breeding tank.
