Process for the manufacture of an expanded structure the main part of which is made of leather and the straps of which are situated in the same plane and together form perfectly uniform meshes. This process is characterised in that the skin or sheet of leather is impregnated with a resin or an adhesive in sufficient quantity for the excess part, which is not absorbed by the pores of the skin, to form under the latter a thin film or sheet of resin or of adhesive forming an underlayer, and the resin or the adhesive is chosen with a nonelastic character and without memory so that the underlayer thus formed remains open after expanding and resists the retraction of the skin or of the sheet of leather with which it is intimately bound.
