An apparatus for transporting bags in groups of any size, the said bags being filled with a content not losing its block-like shape during transport, such as, for example, with a food sandwich, towards cartoning machines, by which the bags filled by a bag filling machine are packaged in groups in cartons, is characterised interalia by means (54, 56) for building up on the first conveyor band at least as many bags (36) as are required for a group of bags, and by means (54, 56) for releasing, in each case, the transport movement of as many built-up bags as belong to a particular group of bags. <IMAGE>
