The driver's eyes (3) see the reflection, from the interior of the windscreen (2), of a geometrical figure constituted by selective illumination of an array of miniature filament lamps or LEDs recessed into the top surface of the dashboard. The impression obtd. is of a virtual image visible along the line of sight (7) at a distance (8) of between e.g. 20 and 100 m along the carriageway (9). The selective illumination can be related to the speed of the vehicle so as to indicate e.g. the margin of safety behind a preceding vehicle, or the edges of the road, or other warning signals in apparent motion.
