The methyl ester of 11, 16 - dihydroxy 16 - methyl 9-oxo prost - 13 - ene 1 - carboxylic acid of formula (I), for use in pharmaceutical compsns. is made by (a) reacting methyl 3-hydroxy 5-oxo 1-cyclopentyl 7-heptanoate of formula (II) with lithium alkenyl oxo-silane cuprate of formula (III) at below 0 deg C. in one or more inert solvents; and (b) hydrolysing the silane intermediate in acid medium in presence of inert solvent.
