The core consists of numerous fuel assemblies (5) located inside a cylindrical sheath (8). The core is placed in a reactor vessel, and a prim. coolant flows up the bore of sheath. Between the peripheral assemblies (22) and the inside wall of the sheath is a space which contains a vertical row of horizontal spacer plates (18) fixed to the inside wall of the sheath. Each spacer plate contains several holes in which vertical rods can slide. The rods form several rows which are close together and near the peripheral assemblies, so the rods form partitions controlling the flow of the prim. coolant near the inside wall of the sheath.
