A process for continuously operating a heat recovery installation, which can be employed advantageously in the production of cast iron, is described. At least two fluidised-bed heat exchangers are interconnected in such a way that the free waste heat from a furnace installation, for example a cupola furnace, is supplied with a high degree of fluctuation in output to a first fluidised-bed heat exchanger, in which the waste heat is transmitted to a free-flowing particle material which, for its part, in a second heat exchanger delivers the heat absorbed in the first heat exchanger to a working medium, for example a cold gas, whose temperature is to be kept sufficiently constant. A special condition of this process requires part of the working medium heated in the second heat exchanger to be supplied in a manner capable of being metered to the first heat exchanger, together with the hot waste gas from the heat source. The apparatus for carrying out the process consists essentially of a by-pass conduit between the outlet conduit of the heated working medium from the second heat exchanger to the inlet of the waste gas into the first heat exchanger, and also a further by-pass between waste gas outlet and waste gas inlet of the first heat exchanger.
