Swivel chairs with a lever mechanism which supports the seat and the backrest and synchronously adjusts their inclination are known, in particular; however, the movement sequence has so far not been coordinated such that on pivoting back the backrest a relative movement between the user's back and the backrest, which pulls the upper-body clothing upwards, is avoided; furthermore, the front seat part tilts up and down at the same time and alters the position of the legs and their distance from the floor. According to the invention, a chair maintains inclination and height level of the front seat part (8) in every adjustment position and keeps a constant distance between two points (17, 18) in a region, in each case a broad central region, of seat and backrest (2). This is achieved by an articulated seat shell with front part (8), articulation (10) and rear part (9); by a rear support (4) which supports and pivots the seat part (9) and the backrest (2) and is pivotable about a fixed shaft (7) on the front, immovable support (3) within a pivoting sector defined at the bottom by the horizontal; and by a lever arrangement (11, 12) on the support (3), which lever arrangement supports the front seat part (8) and allows the seat part (8) to move only horizontally during the pivoting and inclination movement of backrest (2) and seat part (9). <IMAGE>
