A steam boiler has a combustion chamber (1) enclosed in so-called cold walls formed by heat exchange surfaces (2). The combustion chamber is fitted with a burner (3) and adjoins the fluidised bed (6) which is separated from it by the common wall (17). - The combustion gases (41,51) from the burner flow into the fluidised bed through openings (4,5) in the common wall. A de-sulphurising agent such as limestone or chalk is injected into the fluidised bed through an opening (9). The de-sulphurised gases then flow to the superheater (13) which also has a common wall with the fluidised bed.
