Cartons or packets such as filled cigarette packets in a vending machine are stacked in a shaft with a weight on top. As the packets are dispensed, the height of the stack is reduced, and the weight travels downwards. A counting mechanism inside the weight is automatically operated, and the number of packets removed is shown by an indicator at the front of the weight. This weight is formed by a housing with a control weight (17) inside, supported by a spring (19) which operates the counting mehcanism. A delay system is included, so that after a count has been made further counts are blocked for a given time. The counting mechanism is of clockwork type with a horizontal spindle (6) connected to a clock spring (10) and an armature (13) operating an escape wheel (12). This operates the delay system. The counter delivers the pulses to an electronic count display or alternatively, to a calculator. ADVANTAGE - Clear indication of number of packets dispensed.
