An aquarium filter comprises a disposable filter cartridge 21 which screws on to a one-piece head 20 having inlet 23 and outlet 24 and a cylindrical valve member 26 which is rotated to close the connections between the inlet and outlet and the cartridge before the cartridge is unscrewed. Body 52, which defines passages between the cartridge and the head, is removed from the spent cartridge and placed in a new one. The valve member is received in a cylindrical recess in the head 20 (Fig. 4). Such filters may act in parallel or series and contain various filter media. <IMAGE>
