A device for catalytically de-toxifying exhaust gas, with at least one monolithic ceramic body (10, 11 ; 103) having a honeycomb structure and having a catalytically active surface coating, disposed in a metal outer housing (1) consisting of two shells with exhaust gas inlet and outlet nozzles on the end face, a resilient matting (13 ; 13' ; 104) being interposed between the outer housing (1) and the ceramic body (10, 11 ; 103) and the regions of the outer housing in front of and behind the ceramic bodies being covered with screens, characterized in that the shells of the outer housing (1), including the exhaust gas inlet and outlet nozzles, are integrally continuous components and in that a housing-like holding device (inner housing) (2) consisting of temperature-resistant metal, optionally provided with recesses or gaps in the casing region of the ceramic bodies, is disposed in the carrying outer housing (1) and extends, at least outside the sections for storing the ceramic bodies (10, 11), at a distance from the outer housing (1) and is so fixed, at least at one end (18, 19, 20, 21) as to be freely displaceable in the axial direction in order to equalise different thermal expansions.</p>
