Mammalian organs or tissue having improved suitability for transplantation are obtained by subjecting a mammal to an essential fatty acid deficient diet, and removing the organ or tissue from the mammal. The organ or tissue can be implanted in a recipient without the need for the administration of immunosuppressants to the recipient.
