For the adaptive control of an electro-magnetic flow-determining element 11, e.g. a control rod or control valve of a diesel injection pump, a state and disturbance observer 12 is employed as a model which supplies estimated variables e.g. of control rod speed @ and magnetic force @ to the input of a state controller 10 and also supplies disturbance force information @stör about the influence of friction and other disturbances via a high-pass filter (DT1, fig 2) to the input of the state controller 10, as a result of which a particularly fast movement of the element 11 is possible and, furthermore, steady-state errors are prevented from reaching the state controller. The observer 12 has inputs on lines L4, L5 indicative of the current supplied to the element 11 and of its resulting position x. The position x is compared with a set position W and any error input to the state controller 10. A current control loop 14 may also be provided. <IMAGE>
