In the maintenance of large vessels, sealing surfaces, for example downwardly facing vessel cover surfaces, are to be cleaned. Because of their position, hitherto it was only possible to clean them manually. Cleaning is carried out by means of a device in which a cleaning unit (2) is borne by a remote controllable travelling mechanism (3) which is driven by a motor and can be moved and guided along the sealing surface (4). The travelling mechanism (3) is designed in the manner of a clamp, there being arranged at one end a support wheel (16) which bears on a running surface (6) disposed parallel to the sealing-surface plane and the cleaning unit (2) and guide rollers (17) being attached at the other end.
