Terpolymers containing sulfonate functionality and process for their preparation.

Terpolymers of acrylamide, an alkylacrylamide and an ethylenically unsaturated sulfonate-containing monomer are made by forming a homogeneous solution of them in de-oxygenated water, using a suitable anionic or nonionic surfactant or a mixture of both, under an atmosphere of nitrogen; adding free radical initiator to initiate polymerization of said monomers; and copolymerizing at a temperature of about 10 DEG C to 90 DEG C to form the terpolymer.
