Polyvalent cations (e.g., U(IV), Fe(III) can be extracted from aqueous solution using novel organophosphorus compounds of the formulas: <IMAGE> wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from alkyl, alkoxyl, alkylaryl and alkylaryloxy groups having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms or hydroxyl; R3 is independently selected from substituted and unsubstituted alkyl and alkylaryl groups having 1 to about 18 carbon atoms or hydrogen; R4 is independently selected from alkyl and alkylaryl groups having 1 to about 18 carbon atoms; provided that the sum of the carbon atoms of the R1, R2, R3 and R4 groups is at least 15; and R5 is independently selected from substituted and unsubstituted alkyl and alkylaryl groups having 1 to about 18 carbon atoms or a polymeric group; provided that the sum of the carbon atoms of the R1, R2 and R5 groups is at least 16.
