A unit injector includes an injection nozzle (3), a solenoid valve (17), a plunger barrel (2), a pumping plunger (18), an inlet passage (13) and an overflow passge (16). The pumping plunger has axial grooves (27,28) and a part-circumferential groove (29). In the first and second normal positions of the plunger, the plunger chamber (2a) communicates with the inlet passage via the two grooves (27,29) and also with the overflow passage via the other axial groove (28). In the start position, the plunger chamber communicates with the inlet passage via the two grooves (27,29) but not with the overflow passage. In the emergency stop position, the plunger chamber communicates with the inlet passage via the groove (27) but not with the overflow passage.
