In order to grip and turn a workpiece, the gripping device has two gripping arms (17, 18), to which holding members (16a, 16b) rotatable about a common axis (53) are fixed. The gripping arms (17, 18) can be moved apart and towards one another by a gripping drive (21). The rotation of the holding members (16a, 16b) is caused by a rotary drive (27) which drives the one holding member (16a) via a toothed-belt drive (30). In the other gripping arm (18), there is a further toothed belt (33) which is driven by the same rotary drive (27). The force is transmitted via a length-adjustable transmitting device (35) from the rotary drive (27) to the gripping arm (18). <IMAGE>
