PURPOSE:To obtain the titled carbon fibers, having a high tensile elongation at breaking point, and useful as a raw material for composite materials, etc., by heat-treating a precursor in an oxidizing atmosphere, subjecting the resultant flameproof fibers to carbonization and surface oxidation, and heat-treating the resultant fibers at a high temperature in an inert gas atmosphere, etc. CONSTITUTION:A precursor, e.g. acrylonitrile based synthetic fibers, is heat- treated in an oxidizing atmosphere to give flameproof fibers, which are used as a raw material to produce carbon fibers. In the process, the precursor is subjected to carbonization or surface oxidation at the same time or carbonization and then surface oxidation, and the resultant carbon fibers are heat-treated at least 1,000 deg.C temperature in an atmosphere constituted of an inert gas or/ and a hydrogen halide to give the aimed carbon fibers. |
