Pharmaceutical formulation comprises (1) 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine (I), or its pharmaceutically acceptable derivs. as active ingredients and (2) an acceptable carrier. The formulations are pref. administered by injection (partic. using sterile water as the carrier) or orally as tablets or capsules. Derivs. of (I), (A), which are converted in vivo to (I), or to its active metabolites or decomposition prods., are new, excluding the following: monophosphate, disodium-monophosphate, 2-cyanoethyl-monophosphate, triphosphate, p-toluenesulphonate, acetate, methanesulphonate and Ph3C-derivs., and cpds. where 5'-C atom is attached to another nucleotide or nucleoside deriv. Specified (A) are the 5'-(diphosphate,3-methylbutyrate, octanoate, palmitate, 3-chlorobenzoate, benzoate, hydrogensuccinate and pivalate) esters of (I). |
