The transport of workpieces on work carriers (WT) into the individual stations (SI) is effected via a transport device (TE) on which buffers (P) for work carriers (WT) are formed in front of the stations (SI). Serving to reduce the cycle time are prefixing and transport devices (VTE) which prefix the work carriers (WT) in a ready position of the buffer (P) and then transport them in a positive-controlled manner into the allocated fixing and clamping device (FSE) for the work carriers (WT) in the following station (SI). By this positively controlled transport, sequences of movement for the following assembly, machining or inspection operations can be initiated with the prefixing of the work carriers (WT). The invention can be used in particular for assembly lines in modular type of construction.
