In order to be able to use in an unchanged manner an apparatus for driving and deflecting an endless transport chain (2) both in the case of horizontal and in the case of vertical chain deflection, the chain deflection wheel (1), the drive (3) assigned to the latter and the motor (4) flange-mounted on the latter are combined to form a constructional unit forming a support (5). The support (5) can optionally be arranged on a traversing frame (8) in such a manner that the axis of the deflection wheel (1) is aligned either in the horizontal direction or in the vertical direction perpendicularly with respect to the longitudinal extent of the chain (2). <IMAGE>
