The invention concerns a nuclear power station with a gas-cooled high-temperature reactor that is located eccentrically within a cylindrical reactor pressure vessel, and whose core is formed by spherical fuel elements. The high-temperature reactor is characterised by a special geometry; for example, it is rectangular or elliptical in cross-section, so that it is possible to perform all shut-down procedures with only the help of absorber rods that can be moved in the side graphite reflector, even at higher outputs. This enables a flow upwards through the heaped core, so that no additional thermal stresses on core internals occur during residual-heat removal by natural convection. The heat utilisation system, consisting of e.g. steam generators, is located in a second area within the reactor containment structure, lying next to the first area containing the nuclear reactor; the relative position of the two components is fixed so that a relatively small diameter of the reactor pressure vessel results. The primary coolant flows downwards through the heat utilisation system, and the secondary coolant upwards.
