PURPOSE:To enable a reversible optical recording with high recording shelf- stability and long-term stability, by utilizing the photochromic reversible optical reaction of a specific dimerized dioxypyrimidine derivative. CONSTITUTION:A monomolecular film of a dimerized dioxypyrimidine derivative shown by a formula I is accumulated on a substrate. In the formula I ; R1 and R2 independently represent hydrogen, lower alkyl, and 16-24 C alkyl, and R3 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl. Here, the lower alkyl is 1-3 C alkyl, especially 1-2 C alkyl. The pyrimidine derivative is obtained by a method wherein a thymidine or a thymine derivative is caused to react with a long-chain alkyl halide to produce an alkyl derivative and this is dimerized by light. The compound can form a monomolecular film on a water surface. This film is accumulated on the substrate, for example, by an LB method, whereby a film of large area with the satisfactorily oriented part of the dimerized dioxypyrimidine derivative is obtained. This film is to be a reversible optical recording medium which allows the writing or erasing to be repeatedly carried out with a low energy. |
