The illumination has a centrally arranged light source (2) which is covered at the top by a roof reflector (3). A cover (8) consisting of clear glass is present below the light source (2) and is at least partially provided with prismatic grooves (11). The light which comes from a vertical direction is laterally deflected with respect to the vertical central plane, while the light which falls obliquely onto the prismatic grooves is deflected as secondary radiation in a manner inclined with respect to the horizontal plane. An interspace with low illumination remains between the primary radiation and secondary radiation. As a result of the direct radiation directed downwards, the light is prevented from dazzling and an even distribution of light towards the right and towards the left is achieved.
