The invention relates to a linear motion apparatus for stepwise motion along a straight line, preferably for workpiece carriers, the motion being intended to take place in two directions. According to the invention, a bar-shaped basic body is configured in such a manner that a conveyor belt is deflected in two parallel planes at its ends, the two ends of the conveyor belt being fixedly connected to a carriage which slides along an outer surface of the basic body which has a rectangular or square outline and is constructed as a mirror-symmetrical extruded profile. One of the deflection rollers at at least one end of the basic body is moved preferably in a stepwise manner, as a result of which a linear incremental motion can occur.
