The antilock braking system has a transducer (34) acoustically coupled to each brake pad pari (28) and provide a signal dependent on the sound emitted by the pads. A detector (38) analyses the signal and sends a feedback signal to a controller (40) which adjusts the braking pressure. - When the pad is in frictional contact with the wheel, the detector sends a feedback signal to the controller which momentarily releases the force exerted by the brake pad to prevent wheel-lock When the rate of reduction of the electrical output signal is greater than a predetermined rate the feedback signal is generated by the detector.
