Packages having improved stability at the edges of the less flexurally rigid end profiles of cuboidal material, in particular of flat stacks (reams) of paper, are obtained by the edges of the packing-paper web fed to the packaging machine being reinforced by the sticking on of narrow strips of light kraft paper. The device which is suitable for this and is incorporated into the packaging machine comprises two units which act independently of each other and are connected to the edge cutters of the packaging machine. They can be adjusted transversely to the running direction of the web and have an automatic tensile-stress control for matching to the cyclic operation of the packaging machine. <IMAGE>
