PURPOSE:To obtain the integrated optical element with high light utilization efficiency, by providing an intermediate layer which has a lower refractive index than a planar optical waveguide layer between a planar optical waveguide layer where light from a light source is incident and a planar optical waveguide layer which supplies light to a photodetector among >=2 planar optical waveguide layers provided on one substrate to shift the light. CONSTITUTION:When the light from the light source 11 is incident on at least one planar optical waveguide layer 3 among >=2 plane optical waveguide layers 3 and 5 provided on one substrate 1, the incident light is propagated in the planar optical waveguide layer 3 and a part of it is propagated to other planar optical waveguide layers 5 for supplying light to the photodetector 12. Then the optical element provided on at least one of the two kinds of planar optical waveguide layers 3 and 5 put the light propagated in the planar optical waveguide layers 3 and 5 in target operation. Therefore, the light beam put in the difference operation by the optical element are guided to the difference planar optical waveguide layers 3 and 5 and never pass through the same optical element repeatedly and unnecessarily. Consequently, the utilization efficiency of the light is high and many optical elements can be integrated. |
