Agglomerated phosphate furnace charge and process for its preparation

Calcined, finely divided phosphate, which is obtained as abraded material from agglomerates for the charging of electric furnaces for phosphorus production, is converted into a supplementary furnace charge. For this purpose, the finely divided phosphate is mixed with carbon as reductant (reducing agent), the required amount of silicon dioxide as flux and with phosphoric acid as binder and the mixture is shaped into briquettes which are hardened by heating to a sufficient temperature. Reaction takes place between the acid and the finely divided phosphate, and hardened briquettes of phosphate salts are obtained. The additional charge has a higher content of P2O5 than the main charge and thus makes possible an increased phosphorus yield.
