In the case of a vehicle roof in which a roof opening is provided in a fixed roof surface, which opening can be closed by means of a slidable or tilt-and-slide panel, the guideways for the panel, and the driving device are combined into a functional unit which can be fitted to the roof opening. This functional unit can be fitted directly to the roof opening with the aid of connecting brackets, clips, attachment flanges or the like, or a frame is provided which is inserted into the roof opening and which then supports the functional unit. A frame of this type only extends over the cutout region of the roof opening. If possible the roof opening may also have an edge which is bent inwards and on which the functional unit is then fitted. If the roof liner is, for example, formed by a fixed roof liner, the water-removal device can be formed directly by this roof liner or a water-catching shell may be provided which either extends continuously over and beyond the roof opening or is subdivided so that water-catching shell parts are arranged respectively on the front side and the rear side of the roof opening.
