A tool 10 for inserting and retrieving an optical fibre attenuator 12 into and out of a collet 16 which holds the attenuator 12. The tool consists of a probe 14 having a narrow tip 13 for inserting through the bore 11 of the attenuator 12 and an abutment surface 15 for engagement with the attenuator 12. The tool 10 carries the attenuator 12 with its tip 13 inserted through the bore 11 thereof, and places it on the surface of the mouth of an open ended collet 16. As the tool 10 is inserted into the collet 16 the surface 15 comes to abut the attenuator 10, and continued insertion causes the attenuator arms 17 to slide down corresponding slits 18, in the collet 16 until jammed therein. The tool is withdrawn. The attenuator 12 can be caused to engage the surface 15, after insertion of the tool 10 from the other end, for removal. The probe 14 may be covered by a threaded cap 20 which may have a recess 24 for holding the collet 16. The tool 10 and the cap 20 may have hand grips 22, 23. <IMAGE> |
